If you are a golfer, and are considering going to Tenerife in the late autumn, but aren’t sure where to go, then perhaps this article will be of some help. I and my wife and two teenage children are golfers, although not low handicappers, and we were faced with the dilemma last autumn of finding a suitable destination for a half term golfing holiday.
The main difficulty was to find somewhere in our price bracket with a decent hotel, decent food, and a decent golf course. Having checked out Turkey, Egypt, Cyprus, and Tunisia as the only places warm enough in October to swim as well as play golf we decided on Tenerife, because the hotel reports in the other places weren’t good enough or consistent enough.
We picked Las Madrigueras Golf Hotel and Spa, next to the las Americas golf club in Tenerife because it was a five star resort, and the reports we read were mostly good. Additionally they were offering a seven nights six rounds of golf deal including two buggies, at a really good price.
It is only commonsense to realise that when something is offered at a good price there must be a reason. I have to say that the only reason we could see after staying there was the economic situation, in that folk are not going on vacation.
The hotel was very nice, the situation right on the golf course was fantastic, the service good, and we could not fault any of that. In fact our accommodation was as close to the course as you could be, and our buggies were virtually outside our door every morning. The only thing I would say is that food and drink wise it was just too expensive. Breakfast was the only meal we ate in because it was in our deal. We ate at the golf club, not cheap, and then took a taxi downtown in the evenings.
The golf was pretty much everything we could have hoped for. Every morning after breakfast we sped off through the electronic gates onto the course. The sky was unfailingly blue, and the day warm, but what of the golf course?
First of all I must tell you it is busy almost all day. There were always crowds on the first tee, so if you are shy of playing off in front of people you will soon be cured, because they may look professional, but not all are good.
Considering the traffic on the course we always got round pretty quickly, normally in around four hours. We really enjoyed the course, and there were some tricky holes. One comment would be that whilst the green keepers and course staff obviously worked hard at repair and maintenance they were not helped by the golfers, who never seemed to replace divots. The size of the divots I think is a consequence of imitating the pros on television, who don’t replace them because they have a caddie who does that. This is a pity because it could spoil the course in time.

Finally we would recommend a golf break here in Tenerife, although the island itself has too much concrete for us. There are lots of great places featured on
